The DEALBREAK Forensic Methodology
How we turn thousands of scattered consumer disputes and complex terms of service into objective mathematical metrics — without commercial bias or marketing spin.
Just as an automotive crash-test does not evaluate the comfort of the seats but the chassis deformation upon collision, DEALBREAK does not assess superficial satisfaction: we measure what breaks when a consumer tries to cancel or dispute a charge.
The Frustration Score (FS %) : Mathematical Formula
The Frustration Score measures the statistical proportion of users experiencing functional, contractual, or financial failure during their subscription. To avoid distortions on smaller data volumes, our model applies Bayesian Dirichlet smoothing based on the observed distribution across 528 brands.
DEALBREAK Standardized Calculation Formula:
N_critical (weight 1.0): 1-star reviews, banking chargebacks, post-cancellation debits, abusive equipment return penalties.
N_mitigated (weight 0.5): 2 and 3-star reviews, price hikes imposed without fair notice, unresponsive customer support.
N_total: Volume of unique collected and deduplicated reviews over the rolling 24-month period.
α = 10, β = 25 (Bayesian Priors): Regularization preventing a brand with only 3 negative reviews from displaying an artificial 100% score.
Under Control
Smooth exit, transparent terms
Vigilance
Restrictive clauses, strict notice
High Disputes
Recurring hidden fees, exit friction
Critical Risk
Exit blocked, unauthorized debits
The Hidden Cost Index (HCI /10): The 4 Universal Pillars
Promotional advertised prices almost never reflect real spending. Our index quantifies the budget gap on a 10-point scale across 4 cross-sector pillars:
Access Surcharges & Forced Add-ons
Penalizes mandatory hardware rentals, non-refundable administrative fees, essential modules sold as paid add-ons, and deferred activation charges.
Auto-Renewal & Opaque Term Dates
Sanctions the omission of renewal notices, buried 30-to-60-day notice requirements, debits triggered 48 hours before the stated date, and 4-week billing cycles (13 charges/year).
Exit Frictions (Dark Patterns)
Measures violations of statutory 1-click cancellation, disabled buttons on mobile apps, forced calls to premium retention lines, and systematic rejection of legitimate proofs.
Financial Retention & Undue Penalties
Evaluates the frequency of abusive hardware replacement fees, remaining term penalties, charges continuing after cancellation notice, and refund delays.
Omnibus Directive Compliance (EU 2019/2161)
In accordance with European Directive 2019/2161 (Omnibus Directive) and international consumer protection standards:
DEALBREAK does not create, pay for, or alter any reviews. Citations come from named public sources where available: no figure is published without a citable source.
Audited companies hold an enforceable, cost-free right of reply to dispute outdated findings or demonstrate terms compliance.
Outbound links to alternatives are strictly identified as sponsored links (rel="sponsored nofollow") with zero impact on score calculations.
Business Model: How We Maintain Independence
Most comparison websites monetize through paid agreements with vendors they rank at the top: the « sponsored recommendation » model.
DEALBREAK operates under the inverse principle: no audited brand can ever pay for a recommendation. When a brand exhibits a critical frustration score, we direct users to the healthiest alternative recommended by former customers. If a user signs up through our link, we receive a standard referral fee at zero extra cost to the user.
This model aligns our economic incentives with consumers: we have zero incentive to protect abusive subscription lock-in practices.
